You know a show is bound to be fun when the first thought a main character has about their companion is ‘she could be interesting to kill.”
Snarky, sarcastic, and way too short, the Netflix Original series “The End of the F***ing World” follows a self-proclaimed psychopath, James, and his outcast girlfriend-ish companion, Alyssa, as they give up on their town and leave with no destination in mind.
There’s just one problem. Alyssa has no idea James wants to kill her, making for a suspenseful time as the viewer follows the pair while they traverse the country to escape their own personal miseries.
Perhaps the most entertaining thing about the show is how much it can say in how little time. With only eight episodes at about 20 minutes each, there should be no way to get from the mess the teens start in to the mess they end in. Yet, there we end anyway, with some Netflix producer probably laughing maniacally at our pain somewhere far far away.
Along the way, despite being disastrously unlikely, the show manages to hit on real emotions and difficult subjects without any restrictions. Maybe that stems from Alyssa’s no-holds-barred demeanor or from James’ I-care-negative-three-percent attitude, but either way it brings the seriousness of the subject matter, including suicide, abuse, and murder, into the harsh light to be judged by the viewer.
With this show, Netflix has truly done it again. A perfect mixture of suspense, action, and comedy, “The End of the F***ing World” is a must-watch for the new year.
